How to Align Garage Door Sensors?

Garage door sensors help stop the door when something is in the way. If they are bumped, dirty, or out of line, the door may refuse to close.

How to Align Garage Door Sensors?

Start with the sensor lights

Most garage door photo-eye sensors have small indicator lights. When both sensors are powered, clean, and aimed at each other, the lights should stay steady.

If one light is off, flickering, or a different color than usual, inspect that side first. The problem may be power, alignment, dirt on the lens, or a loose bracket.

Clean the lenses and clear the path

Dust, spider webs, salt, and garage clutter can interrupt the invisible beam between the two sensors. Wipe each lens gently with a soft cloth and remove anything sitting between them.

Check the lower track area as well. A broom, box, bicycle tire, or extension cord can be enough to make the opener think the doorway is blocked.

Loosen and realign the brackets

If the sensors were bumped, loosen the mounting wing nut or bracket screw just enough to move the sensor by hand. Adjust it slowly until both units point directly at each other.

Tighten the hardware carefully once the indicator lights are steady. Avoid twisting the bracket too hard because a small movement can knock the sensor out of line again.

Test the door before daily use

Stand clear of the door and use the wall control to close it. The door should travel down normally without reversing or flashing the opener lights.

If the sensors are clean and aligned but the door still will not close, wiring, opener settings, or damaged sensor hardware may need service.
